What's Your 20?
If someone would have asked me during the Mid-America Trucking Show “What's your 20?” the answer a good bit of the time would have been “At the One20 Booth in the West Hall Pavilion." If you haven't heard of One20 before, time to start listening up. They are making a huge splash on the trucking app scene.
Christian Schenk, the CEO of One20 and Truck That, has a passion for the trucking industry. More to the point, he has a passion for helping truck drivers; DRIVERS, not mega fleet CEOs. What does that mean for you, the driver? Well listen up.
One20 at the core is an app, a free app, for truck drivers to download on any iOS or Android phone or tablet. It provides trucking specific GPS routing for free. Yes, free trucking GPS. It's not your basic google GPS. It allows you to input truck size, weight, hazmat, tolls, no tolls, etc. When put to test against Rand McNally, Garmin, TomTom, and Google it blows them all out of the water for accuracy and functionality. And did I mention its 100% free?
Christian and his team at One20 have taken concepts from other trucking apps and applied them, along with some new helpful stuff, into the One20 App. This includes things like traffic delays, route specific weather overlays on the map, a customizable collection of pins or points of interest such as various types of truck stops, rest areas, casinos, hotels, restaurant, scale houses, and more. All with crowd-sourced reviews and updates. You can even schedule a route with multiple stops, alternate routes for scenic views, toggle between regular view and satellite view, and more. And yes, all this comes free in the app.
In addition, the team at One20 is working as a middle man of sorts to bring significant discounts to the truck driver who uses the app. Partnering with various locations to provide special deals only available inside the app. Discounts will include specials on things you buy everyday from meals to drinks, hotels, health, and more. As a user, you will never see pop up or other annoying ads. That's not how this works.
There are a few of these discounts available in the app now. More will be released in the huge patch they have coming with version 2.0 in July of this year. Christian assures me that the app is getting a huge overhaul with lots of tweaks and additions to make it even more user friendly.
Now you get all this free with the free app. But they have also partnered with AT&T and Samsung to provide truck drivers who need it, a tablet, One20 app pre-installed. The tablet itself costs $399, and then you have to pay for your monthly data package. You get all the benefits of the app, plus the larger screen of the tablet for GPS use, as well as a tablet to use for videos, games, work, pictures, what ever. Not everyone needs this, but it is there for those that are interested. If you are in the market for an all in one tablet solution, look for the One20 tablet in TA, Petro, and Love's truck stops.
I've also been let in on a little inside secret that there may be more deals and use for the tablet in the near future. I will keep you updated as I learn more of the details.
If you currently use the app, or download it in the future, stop by and let me know what you think. The One20 team is always open for suggestions for improvements and better ways to help truck drivers have a safer, happier life out on the road.
